Care and maintenance
One of the topics our customers ask about most often is how to properly care for and maintain a septic system. Regular maintenance is key for a long-lasting septic system for both residential and commercial systems.
Over time, sludge and scum can collect in septic tanks, and it needs to be pumped out, usually every two years. We’ve included a chart (see below) with a more in-depth timeline on how often you should have your septic system pumped, based on the number of people in the household.
Tank Size Number of people in the household
We recommend septic tanks be inspected annually to determine the depth of sludge deposited. Homeowners can do this themselves by lowering an 8- to 10-foot pole into the tank. If the depth of sludge is 40% of the total liquid depth, the tank should be pumped. It is important to keep a detailed record of sludge depth as well as the dates when the tank was pumped.
It’s also a good idea to have a diagram of your septic system, including the location and depth of the septic tank, the location of the tank’s inspection covers, and the drain field boundaries.
Our team can provide annual inspections, and help create a detailed diagram of your tank system.
Drain field rejuvenation
Drain fields help remove contaminants and impurities that emerge from the septic tanks. However, older drain fields can begin to breakdown and will decrease in efficiency. When this happens, the drain field needs to be pumped and rejuvenated.
There are several options for drain field rejuvenations — pumping, hydro-jetting sewer piper, or chemical products. Contact a member of The Rooter Guys team for information about which option will work best for your drain field.
